Lamassu's at Persepolis
Duringthe Neo-AssyrianEmpire (c.883-612), large monumental bulls, oftenwith wings and always with human heads, were placed as gatewayguardiansat the entrances of royal palaces like Khorsabad and Nineveh. Thegeneral idea behind them was thatthey warded off evil. (In jargon: they were apotropaic figures.)Usually, they have five legs. Lion-bodied protective deities are also known, andare usually called "sphinxes".
These monumental statues were called aladlammû("protectivespirit") or lamassu, which means that the originalfemale word wasnow applied for a rather macho demon. In one modern interpretation, theycombine the strength of a bull, the freedom of an eagle, and theintelligenceof a human being.
